Our Mascot

  Green Frog

In November 2023, the green frog was chosen as the FREE Stuff Brampton mascot. The green frog (Lithobates clamitans), native to eastern North America, is a frog species known to call Brampton, Ontario home. Here is a Brampton sighting of a green frog at Heart Lake Conservation Area in October 2025.

  Why Frogs?

Frogs are important environmentally because they are one of the first indicator species via which environmental changes to land and water can be observed.

History of FREE Stuff Brampton

  Our Baby Steps

FREE Stuff Brampton was established in April 2021. That spring, the founder recognized a need on Facebook Marketplace to isolate true free items available in Brampton, Ontario. The saturation of spam in the Brampton market made it difficult for the founder to donate free personal belongings to the community, as these donations could not easily be located by Facebook-user local community members.

After numerous failed attempts to have Facebook block spam ads, FREE Stuff Brampton founder created the Facebook group on April 24 to showcase her own free stuff; while allowing anyone else who lives or works in Brampton to join.

  Safety is Paramount

As this group was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, special attention was given to cleaning/disinfecting and the safe handling and pickup of belongings, while eliminating or restricting and keeping safe in-person contact. When travel restrictions were lifted, the group expanded to include persons who visit Brampton. Because some members live or work outside the City of Brampton border, the group occasionally includes personal belongings from the area around Brampton.

In January 2023, Admin posted Safety Tips for donators and donatees to help ensure the safe transactions of free stuff.

  Rules Matter

Initially the group had few posting rules and minimal moderation. In 2022, after organically reaching over 4000 members, it became important to increase (automated) moderation controls to maintain the integrity of the group. Group Rules and Posting Guidelines were adjusted as needed, over the years. In 2025, the group maintained 47,700 members.

In the interest of time management and prioritizing freebie ads, FREE Stuff Brampton has zero tolerance for scammers and low tolerance for spammers.
